Thanks to old movies, ceiling fans still conjure images of wayward men on the lam in exotic, oppressively hot climes – usually on faraway continents – staying calm in a wicker chair with a stiff drink and a cooling breeze from slowly rotating fan blades above.

There’s a reason why one of the country’s better-known ceiling-fan companies is called Casablanca. It started in 1974 around the time baby boomers were rediscovering the great, 1942 Humphrey Bogart/Ingrid Bergman film of the same name.

Many ceiling fans today still aim for nostalgia and fantasy in their ornamentation and finishes, decorative motors, leaf-shaped blades and art-glass lamps. One company, Fanimation, for instance, recalls the old days with its seemingly archaic belt-driven Bourbon Street model with an antique brass finish.

But there’s also strong demand now for more contemporary, minimalistic styles with plainer more blunt, industrial-style blades in dark metal or neutral white finishes.

One manufacturer, the Modern Fan Co., even specializes in them, having hired Spanish designer Jorge Pensi to create the Pensi model, which subtly suggests a silver drill bit.

“Even when they don’t have a modern aesthetic in their home, people want to go with what they think is a cleaner style in a fan,” said Cara Bryant, a lighting (and fan) specialist at Keidel in Paddock Hills, which has showroom models and can order from catalogs. She suggests customers bring in photos of their room to help select aesthetically appropriate ceiling fans.

And Drew Dearwester, co-owner of Over-the-Rhine’s Switch lighting store (which also sells several brands of fans from catalogs), noted that “Modern fans are getting more architectural.”

Just last week, he installed in a home on Over-the-Rhine’s Pleasant Street a brand-new, sleek bamboo-bladed Haiku model – with a price of approximately $1,100 – from Lexington’s Big Ass Fans. It won this year’s red dot award for international product design.
